Build up a log easily
Only the date, time and spot for the log are required. All other information is optional, and you only have to
enter the information you find interesting or reliable.
- In a few clics, enter the date, time and spot for your log.
-
With a few more clics, memorise, if you wish so, the weather conditions,
your fellow observers, the type of prospection, a comment and a personal
note for the log.
-
Add the observed species by clicking on their name in a list of the species
you have already observed on the spot (a list that has been automatically
built up during your previous logs).
-
Add a species you have not yet seen on the spot by clicking on its name in the list of
all the species you have observed on all spots (your "twitch list" that has been automatically built up during your previous logs).
-
Add a new "twitch" by clicking on its name in the list of all species of the region
(today the list of Western Palearctic birds, later, lists for other regions or taxons).
-
Enter, if you wish, total quantities, visual contacts or heard only contacts, males, females,
youngs, couples, biggest observed group.
-
By clicking on icons, enter informations about nesting activity (parades,
couplings, etc.) and status of the individual (possible, probable, certain
breeder...), the place use (settled, in active migration, hunting, etc.),
moving direction (of the migration, in particular), age, plumage. If you enter
an atlas code, breeding activity (when possible) and status will be automatically
filled in.
-
Save information on the observation's quality (first observation of the species
this year, first singer), if you have a doubt about it, if you find this sighting
remarkable, or if it is second hand data...
-
Write a comment or a personal note for the observation. Add a more precise localisation.
Quickly retrieve your observations
Natalog offers many
simple ways to select among your observations the ones you want to consult.
-
Find all observations of a species of your choice :
> all blackcap sightings.
-
Display your observations of this species on one of the spots where you have seen it :
> all blackcap sightings in the Sherwood forest.
- Find all observations on a spot of your choice :
> all the observations of all the species in the Sherwood forest.
-
Show your observations of a particular species on this spot :
> the observations in the Sherwood forest, but only the blackcap ones.
-
Show your observations of a particular species on this spot :
> the observations in the Sherwood forest, but only the blackcap ones.
-
Show the observations of one year only, one month only, or one month of one year only :
> all sightings in the Sherwood forest (or only the blackcap ones) in may, in 2005, or in october 2006.
-
Show the observations you made between two precise dates of your choice :
>
all sightings you made in the Sherwood forest (or only the blackcap ones) between the 15th and 22nd of march 2005.
-
Show all sightings between two dates of your choice, each year :
> all sightings in the Sherwood forest (or only the blackcap ones) between the 15th and 22nd of march of each year.
-
With on click, change the date by one week, two weeks or one month forwards or backwards :
> all sightings in the Sherwood forest (or only the blackcap ones) between the 15th and 22nd of march of each year, and then between the 23rd and the 29th, and then between march 30th and april 5th, etc.
-
Combine and add criterias to obtain richer crossed selections.
-
Sort the results by spot name or species name alphabetical order.
-
Sort the results by increasing or decreasing date order. Determine the dates of your first or last yearly observation of a species on one of your spot or on all your spots.
Simply organise
your logs and your
information about
your favourite spots
For the spots, only the spot's name, the city's name
and the country's name are required (but this last one in automatically filled in when you observe in your own country).
- Enter a free
comment about the spot (its interest, the best season to explore, the best course, the best
places to spot according to the sun's position...).
- Enter informations to easily get on the spot (localisation on a map, with the publisher,
the reference, the fold...), enter freely a description of the way to the spot.
- Enter
the latitude, the longitude, the GPS or UTM coordinates, manually on with
the help of geolocation functions proposed by Natalog.
Associate a map to your spot (and its subspots).
- Enter
informations on the habitat from a list of well-known nomenclatures (Corine,
Stoc-eps...).
- Memorise the spot's alitude.
- Display your logs and sort them by date, spot, or in folders.
- Create
freely folder and subfolders to organise your spots and logs.
- Filter your logs by month, year or spot.
- Set
your preferred spots as "favorites" to select them quickly when you make a
log.
Easily transmit your observations
- Export
your log in the word processor (".rtf"), layed out spreadsheet (".xls") or
simple text (".txt") format that are compatible with the main word processors
or spreadsheet softwares.
- Export
your log in the new "STD spreadsheet" format (".xls") that is compatible
with main spreadsheet softwares. It will allow further treatments, such as
adaptation to big databases treatments or charts creation.
-
Export your log in the ".ntg" format. This is the way to share your logs with other Natalog 2 users.
-
In a few clicks, directly send your log to as many correspondants as you
wish through Natalog's integrated "send mail"
function*.
- Simply organise your correspondants.
* This function may not be available on some old configurations. Data transmission will then be made through your usual mail application.
Geotag
precisely your spots, your logs
and your observations
- Easily
locate on a map or satellite view, the exact location of your place of exploration.
Natalog 2 predefines a map from the information
you have entered to describe the spot. You can further refine by moving the
cursor to the exact location of your choice.
- Memorize the GPS coordinates of the spot in two clicks from the map. They will be allocated by default to all logs and all sightings you make on this spot.
- Locate
the logs as precisely as the spots and memorise details of a specific observation
point, for example. Do the same to store the exact location of each observation,
if you wish.
- Transmit
geolocation information with your logs. If you include your log in your email,
for example, you can choose to display geolocation as clickable links. Your
correspondent will only have to click on this link to see the map in his browser
exactly as you set it.
Take field notes
easily
with your iPhone®
Thanks to Natalog
Notes (1), a module shipped with Natalog, you can now tap on your iPhone® screen to take notes on the field while you are birdwatching.
- Choose the spot of your log.
- Date and starting time are filled automatically. To record the ending time, just tap on an icon. Of course, all information can be edited manually.
- If you wish so, add the names of co-watchers, or a comment for the log.
- Add
observations by tapping on the name of the species in the local species list.
If the species you want is not yet in the list, use the recent observed species
list, or the list of all species you have observed, or the list of all the
species of the region.
- Tap the three first letters of a species name to find it quickly in the list.
- Add the species one by one or in series. Add an individual of a species by simply tapping on the number of individuals of the species.
- For
each observation, if you wish, add a comment or an atlas code.
- For
the spots you have already geotagd, with Natalog
for example (2), display a map or a sattellite map.
- When you get back home, synchronise Natalog Notes with Natalog to add your field logs to the ones you have previously noted. If you want to, fill your log with all the information that Natalog allows you to manage.
- Natalog
will also manage the synchronisation of the list of the species you have observed,
the list of the recently observed species, the lists of the species of each
spot, the information about spots, and other operations. The synchronisation
can be manual or automatic.
(1) Natalog Notes requires
FileMaker
Go® for iPhone® that must be purchased separately
on the App
Store®.
(2) FileMaker
Go® proposes very simple geolocation functionalities. Natalog Notes uses them without warranty.
